Abstract

Physics is a branch of science that deals with microscopic and macroscopic understanding of life which is believed to be difficult to understand. This is because physics has abstract concepts, one of which is the concept of heat and temperature. This study aims to determine the conceptual understanding profile of high school students in Indonesia on the concepts of heat and temperature. This research is a preliminary study to develop a mental model instrument related to the construction of high school students' understanding. This study uses a descriptive quantitative method with a survey approach. This study involved 262 high school students in Indonesia spread across Riau, West Java, and Banten. The survey used was adapted from the Thermal Concept Evaluation developed by Yeo and Zadnik with Indonesian culture and language adjustments. The results of this study will be processed using the Rasch Model to determine the categories of students' abilities and the level of topic difficulty. Based on the analysis, there are 6.83% of students who have sufficient understanding of the concept of temperature and heat material.
